After previewing the commissioned sound work As Gaeilge Time and Space, a picture that depicts a journey of searching and re-searching the identity of Irish emerges in my mind. While reading Linda’s note and listening to this sound work, I find the journey of searching the Irish identity is highly comparable to that of Taiwan as it is also an island where languages spoken by local people were marginalised by Mandarin Chinese. As Linda wrote in her note ‘language and sound are a part of these myriad materials that when forced to move, either evolve or merge with other cultures, or over time and across space, disappear’, this sound work invites us to think about how the identity of ourselves has been shaped and is being shaped in the era of materialism. The premiere of As Gaeilge Time and Space and an artist talkback session will take place at 2.30 pm, 9 July. Looking forward to meeting you online!
